What Hypnotherapy is not...
For many people, Hypnotherapy may initially bring to mind the cinematographic depictions of hypnosis where the 'vicims' lose all sense of self and obey the hypnotist's every command. However, it takes a lot of time, deprivation of outside social life, food and sleep, peer pressure, constant indoctrination and other such strategies to get a person to relinquish their self will. It is impossible to force someone to do something that they would not normally do, something that would go against their moral code, through the power of hypnosis alone. So you cannot be made to steal from your employer, mug an old lady or kick a puppy unless you had the propensity to do so in the first place.

Another unfortunate image Hypnotherapists have to contend with is the stage hypnotist. As seen on TV and at cabaret clubs, they get people to do ridiculous things for other people's amusement. These hypnotists are very adapt at going through an audience and selecting the ones who are probably highly suggestible. These are the people who given the right opportunity and excuse will “act out” or behave in a manner outside their normal behavior pattern, as often illustrated after several units of alcohol. It is a great form of entertainment but it has no therapeutic value at all.

One of the most important things a Hypnotherapist can do is provide an atmosphere of trust and safety for the patient. A responsible Hypnotherapist assures their patient that their safety and sense of well being is the primary foundation of any session. Remember: it it does not feel right to you, you have the right to call and end to the session at any time or ask for a pause to resume later where you left off.

What is Hypnotherapy then...?
It is a powerful tool for healing ourselves. Hypnotherapy is the purposeful relaxation of a person to the point that they are able to access their subconscious. The subconscious holds the keys to personal discovery, positive motivation and reinforcement, and the ability to correct any imbalances that exist in the body, mind and soul. We all got where we are today on our own special path, so each time we open up the doors of the subconscious it is a truely unique discovery. It is your journey within yourself to find your history, your answers and your peace of mind.
