Shiatsu
< previous therapy ^ therapies overview ^ next therapy >

Shiatsu is a form of massage based in part on the meridian system of traditional Chinese medicine. Pressure is applied to specific points along energy channels circulating throughout the body using thumbs or palms, occasionally elbows and knees if deeper pressure is needed, in order to rebalance the energy flow and maintain harmony within the bodymind.

Practitioners train for an initial period of three years in the models provided by the Chinese and Japanese systems.

What to expect during a treatment...
The treatment takes place lying or sometimes sitting on a mat on the floor, and it is best to wear loose comfortable clothing, as a treatment will usually involve some gentle limb stretches.

Who can benefit from Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a highly adaptive therapy, effective in the treatment of acute and chronic conditions and ideal for support through transitional periods, or simply for on-going self-development or maintenance.

Where there is tiredness and depletion the shiatsu-touch is profoundly nourishing and regenerative; where there is built-up or excess energy blocking the smooth flow it is dispersing and relieving. For this reason a shiatsu treatment may be calming and relaxing, tonifying and invigorating, according to client needs.

Common complaints for which shiatsu is effective include:

Shiatsu is also a safe and supportive treatment during pregnancy, after the first trimester.
